Will 'Halo Infinite' Multiplayer Be Cross-platform? - Newsweek

Halo Infinite will be available on a few separate platforms at launch, prompting many fans to wonder if crossplay functionality will be supported.

Thanks to yesterday's Gamescom broadcast we finally have an official release date for the latest entry in Master Chief's story.

As promised, Halo Infinite will be debuting in just a few months' time, with its separate multiplayer and campaign portions both launching simultaneously on the exact same day.

This announcement was a long time coming and came as a massive relief to Xbox owners, who were becoming concerned about the ongoing radio silence surrounding the release date.

After all, Microsoft's flagship title had already been delayed for over a year once before (it was originally supposed to debut alongside the Series X and S hardware) and many other games have been pushed back lately due to the impact that the coronavirus pandemic has had on their development.

Fortunately, we now know that Halo Infinite will in fact be released later this year.

Not only that, but 343 Industries also announced that a limited-edition controller and Xbox Series X console—themed around the game—will be coming out in the near future, in order to celebrate the franchise's 20th anniversary.

Is 'Halo Infinite' a Next-gen Exclusive?

While this is obviously welcome news for Halo fans, it has also raised a few concerns about the availability of the Xbox Series X console itself.

The new limited-edition model is reportedly quite difficult to pre-order (on account of the high demand and scalpers who are already stockpiling units) and it is still not easy to get a hold of the standard version either.

Well here is another one for the scalpers! I feel bad for us gamers.

To clarify though, Halo Infinite is not a next-gen exclusive. It will be released on the Series X, the Series S, PC and the Xbox One at launch.

As such, if you have not yet managed to secure the newest hardware for yourself, this will not prevent you from downloading the game.

Will 'Halo Infinite' Multiplayer Be Cross-platform?

That being said, it is perfectly understandable that players will want to experience the much-hyped release on the most powerful console they can get their hands on.

In addition to this, some may also be worrying about whether they will be able to play with their friends if they own systems that are from different generations.

If you are concerned about that last point, rest assured that Halo Infinite will feature crossplay. As verified in an official Halo Waypoint blog, this means that Xbox One, Xbox Series X and PC owners can all join the same online matches and fight alongside each other, as if they were playing on the exact same platform.

In addition to this, the game will also support cross-progression functionality, meaning that you will be able to synchronize your progress and multiplayer customization between the various platforms.

In other news from the Gamescom Opening Night Live broadcast, we were treated to a preview of how Call of Duty: Vanguard will look on next-gen consoles and got to find out when Vampire: The Masquerade Bloodhunt will be arriving on Steam Early Access.

Halo Infinite will be released on Xbox One, Xbox Series S, Xbox Series X and PC. It will also be available as part of the Xbox Game Pass service at launch.
