OAKLAND, Calif. (KGO) -- A security guard who was shot in Oakland earlier this week has died, police said on Saturday.

The security guard was working with TV news station, KRON 4 News, when he was shot during an attempted robbery on November 24, police said.

The shooting victim is identified as retired police officer Kevin Nishita, according to the Alameda County Sheriff's office.

The Oakland police department told ABC7 News in a written statement:

"This unfortunate loss of life marks the City of Oakland's 126th life lost to violence. This death is now being investigated by the Oakland Police Department's Homicide Section."

The shooting happened on 14th street near Webster.

He was taken to the hospital and was listed in stable condition.

Local media outlets, including ABC7 News, routinely use security guards to accompany reporters and photographers.


Thieves have targeted news crews for camera equipment.

Investigators are looking for help to find the shooter. Crime Stoppers of Oakland and the Oakland Police Department are offering a $32,500 reward for information leading to an arrest.
