CROSWELL — Last Wednesday, two Croswell-Lexington Pioneers, Adam Barbarich and Ethan McCombs, signed their National Letters of Intent to continue their respective careers at the college level.

Barbarich, a baseball player, signed with Delta College, while McCombs, a cross country runner, signed with St. Clair County Community College.

“It’s really nice because I don’t have to worry about where I’m going,” Barbarich said. “It’s set and it’s all in front of me. Now I can just focus on my future and get to play ball while I’m in school. It’s going to be fun.”

McCombs added: “It feels really good. I feel great that SC4 was willing to take me on, and I’m really grateful for my coaches that have gotten me here.”

Barbarich, and outfielder, first started getting recruited by Delta this fall, when he became a member of the Saginaw Sugar Beets travel baseball team.

“I was looking at other schools, but I never really went for any of them,” he said. “I tried out for a summer league team and I ended up playing with them this past fall. The assistant coach at Delta happened to be the head coach of that team and he recruited me.”

The coach, Brandon Evans, is in his first year on the staff at Delta, and is excited about what Barbarich will bring to his first recruiting class.

“Adam is probably one of the hardest-working guys that is in this program,” Evans said. “I coached Adam in fall ball and that is probably the first thing that I noticed. He’s a hard worker in the classroom and on the field, so he’s going to bring a lot to our team. We’re pretty excited to have him.”

Last season, Barbarich played left field for Cros-Lex, batting .316 and driving in five runs, while helping the Pioneers to a Blue Water Area Conference title.

“Last year was really fun,” Barbarich said. “It was probably the most fun I’ve had with a baseball team. This year is going to be harder for sure, because we lost a lot of seniors, but I think we can pull through if we work hard. We should do pretty well this season.”

Barbarich plans on studying automotive design.

As for McCombs, he joins a SC4 cross country program that is fairly new, and has already recruited a handful of Cros-Lex athletes, including Trenton Livingston, Jade Kellerman and Lily Connelly.

“A ton of Cros-Lex kids have gone on to that team and it feels good to be a part of that,” McCombs said. “I’m looking to get a degree and improve on my times overall. I know it’s a longer distance in college and I’m looking forward to that for sure. I’ve always run better long distance. But overall, I’m just looking for a good education and a good time.”

McCombs said that he was also looking at Saginaw Valley State University and Detroit Mercy, before ultimately deciding to sign with the Skippers.

“I went with SC4 because the community seemed really nice,” McCombs said. “I live near Port Huron, and I really like what’s going on down there. Coach (Andrea) Rheaume approached me and that made me feel better about signing on.”

McCombs has been a member of the Cros-Lex cross country program since he was in first grade, and during his four years on varsity, he qualified for the state finals three times.

“I was running just because I could,” he said, adding that he never expected to be a college runner. “I wanted to stay in good health and I liked going out to stuff at school and being part of the community.”

His personal best time is 16:43.0, and this past season, his season-best time of 17:10.2 was good for the second-fastest in the county, behind teammate James Elling.

McCombs plans on studying nursing at SC4.
