Emergency crews responded to a series of multiple-vehicle accidents on a slippery interstate in Rock County, Wisconsin.
A dispatcher there told weather.com in a phone call that there were injuries and several fire and ambulance assets were sent to the pileups. The number or extent of the injuries wasn't immediately known.
"Please avoid northbound and southbound Interstate 90 in Rock County at this time," the Sheriff's Office said in a social media update. "Our personnel are currently handling several multiple-vehicle accidents and subsequent pileups."
Local media reported that 20 to 50 vehicles may be involved.
Video posted by WTMJ-TV showed what appeared to be a vehicle on fire .
A stretch of Interstate 39/90 in both directions from Janesville to Beloit was closed.
While there wasn't significant snow accumulation, even a thin coating can lead to hazardous conditions.
"This is yet another example illustrating you don't need 'heavy' snowfall for roads to become slippery," weather.com senior meteorologist Jonathan Erdman said. "If less than an inch of snow falls quickly, within an hour or so, the thin film of snow on roads can make travel dangerous."
