What you need to know: Yale football will begin its season on Saturday, entering as the Ivy League pre-season favorite to win the conference according to the Ivy Football Preseason Poll. Yale received 13 of 16 total first place votes after finishing last season 8-2 (6-1 in conference). Yale's strength was the running game and its defense last season, as it ranked ninth in the FCS in rushing offense with 232.8 yards per game and fifth in scoring defense with 19.5 points per game. The season opener will be a tough task, as Holy Cross is the defending Patriot Conference champion. Holy Cross gave Boston College a scare last week before falling late 31-28 in a game delayed by weather. Yale has opened its season against Holy Cross for the past four seasons, and Yale only won once in 2019, 23-10 at home. Yale returns plenty of talent this year, with 15 All-Ivy selections being retained. Leading the group is quarterback Nolan Grooms, who was the Ivy League offensive player of the year last season. The Bulldogs also return running back Joshua Pitsenberger, who was the Ivy League rookie of the year in 2022. Yale went 5-0 at home last season and will hope to extend that streak into this one. Yale will have to slow down Holy Cross quarterback Matthew Sluka, who has completed 19-of-29 passes for 320 yards and two touchdowns with one interception while rushing for 226 yards and two touchdowns on 33 carries. Holy Cross running back Jordan Fuller may be its most dangerous weapon, as he has rushed for 229 yards and six touchdowns on 26 carries in two games.
