CASS CITY — After months of delay, the Thumb Sportswriters Association was able to hand out its annual basketball awards.
Croswell-Lexington was very successful in both boys and girls basketball.
For the boys, the Pioneers were the All-Thumb Team of the Year.
Before the season was canceled due to the COVID- 19 pandemic, the Pioneers were playing for a district championship, with a 20-1 record.
“There’s a lot of high-quality basketball teams and programs in the Thumb,” said Cros-Lex coach Lance Campbell. “To be recognized is a great accomplishment. That’s one more thing they can add to their résumé.
Added Campbell: “We’re very excited about it. I think it allows people to know Cros-Lex basketball is pretty good. I think maybe at the beginning of the year there were a lot of people state-wide, who didn’t know where Cros-Lex was.”
Campbell, along with two of his All-Thumb All-Stars Isaac Espinoza and Jake Noll, accepted the Team of the Year trophy.
Junior Hunter Soper was also selected to the first team but was unable to attend the game. Campbell accepted a trophy and pennant on his behalf.
Soper, a guard/forward, was the BWAC MVP, leading the team in scoring (15.6) and rebounds (8.6), along with 2.7 assists, 2.1 steals and 2.0 blocks.
“Hunter had a fantastic season leading the team to a BWAC title and 18-1 regular season total,” Campbell said. “He was virtually unguardable. He can post, shoot off the dribble and has a great midrange pull-up jumper.”
Saige Slanec attended the game, to receive his Sixth Player of the Year award.
Slanec, a sophomore, provided instant offense off the bench, scoring 7.25 ppg, to go with 2.5 rebounds and 1.3 steals.
“He never complained, and he knew his role,” said Cros-Lex coach Lance Campbell. “He loves to score the basketball.”
For the girls, Lily Connelly participated in the All-Thumb All-Star Game, where she scored five points, to help the East win the game.
Before that, she was recognized for making the All-Thumb Girls Basketball First Team. She received a trophy and pennant.
Connelly, a senior guard, was the conference MVP, after leading the team in scoring (13.6), assists (3.5) and steals (4.0), while pulling down 6.0 rebounds per game.
“Lily took her game to a new level this year,” said Cros-Lex coach Darren Bongard. “Her ability to create in the full court and blow by defenses was exciting to watch.”
