Four-star tight end Jerry Cross commits to Penn State - 247Sports

Penn State has picked up its second commitment in the Class of 2022 in a four-day span. Milwaukee (Wis.) King junior tight end Jerry Cross announced his pledge on Tuesday evening. Cross now joins four-star wide receiver Kaden Saunders to make up the Nittany Lions’ quickly-growing Class of 2022.

"I got in touch with all the coaches and we had a lot of good conversations,” Cross told 247Sports. “We have a really good relationship with each other. That really drove me to commit there.”

The 6-foot-6, 220-pound prospect was on the verge of announcing on July 17, but pumped the brakes and instead committed to the Nittany Lions just nine days later. In between, Cross and the Penn State staff had several conversations and the relationship between the two sides grew rapidly.

He was recruited for the Nittany Lions by assistant coach Tyler Bowen and offensive analyst Ty Howle. He chose Penn State over scholarship offers from Iowa, Iowa State, Michigan, Michigan State, Northern Illinois, Purdue and Wisconsin.

His final two consisted of Penn State and Wisconsin.

"They're good coaches with good personalities,” he said. “A lot of them went there too, so they tell me all about it. We don't always even talk about football, we talk about just life. They're easy to talk to."

A four-star prospect, Cross is the nation’s No. 6 tight end and the No. 190 prospect in the Class of 2022 according to the 247Sports Composite rankings. He’s the No. 6 prospect in Wisconsin.

“I had a chance to see him on 7-on-7 in the winter, and that was a good experience,” 247Sports’ Allen Trieu explained earlier this month on the Lions247 Podcast. “He was one of the guys I felt like I needed to see because on his film he’s just so much bigger and better than everybody else. He almost doesn’t have to leave the ground to win jump balls against some of the guys he’s playing against [at] 6-6, 218.

“In 7-on-7 we had a chance to see him maybe run a little bit more of the route tree, go against guys that are more at his ability level, at least close to his size. Jaden Mangham was actually one of those guys, and you see a kid who has all the upside and the tools in the world. I think being that big right now you project a couple years down the road to what he could be as a tight end, especially with what schools want in a tight end these days, he’s going to be a guy that’s going to move all around the formation, going to really be able to create some mismatches and still potentially be a split-out hybrid type of tight end. I don’t really see him having his hand in the dirt a ton, even if he grows into his frame.”
