Wonder Woman 1984's Cro-Mags Shirt Was Provided by the Punk Band's Former Frontman - CBR - Comic Book Resources

John Joseph -- former frontman of the cult-favorite hardcore punk band Cro-Mags -- has revealed that the Cro-Mags t-shirt seen in the DC film Wonder Woman 1984 was actually sent by him at the request of writer-director Patty Jenkins.

In Wonder Woman 1984, a woman with a red mohawk can be seen wearing a shirt featuring the artwork from the Cro-Mags album The Age of Quarrel. "Had about 20 people tell me about this," Joseph wrote in an Instagram post on Dec. 25. "Patty Jenkins director/writer (Monster, Wonder Woman, etc.) is a good friend since the '80s -- she asked me to send her a Cro-Mags shirt for the new Wonder Woman 1984 released today."

"I sent her this Age of Quarrel t-shirt," he continued. "The original album (black cassette) was recorded in 1984. Me and Parris (guitarist) paid for the recording. His father owned a pressing plant in Nashville and pressed up the tapes. Here's some trivia too -- I got Patty her first directing gig. It was for the band Leeway -- 'Three Wishes' video. She went to film school in NYC but grew up in DC -- is a huge Bad Brains fan too!" Notably, in Wonder Woman 1984, the woman wearing the Cro-Mags shirt is seen walking alongside a man sporting a Bad Brains shirt.

While some have brought up timeline issues created by the shirt, namely the fact that The Age of Quarrel released in 1986 (two years after Wonder Woman 1984 takes place), Joseph has been quick to defend the film, pointing out that the original black cassette tape version of the album was recorded and manufactured in 1984 before being released in 1985. Joseph has also spoken to Jenkins' reputation in the punk rock scene, describing the director as "old school hardcore." Joseph served as the Cro-Mags' lead vocalist from 1984 to 1987, and then again from 1991 to 1999, 2002 to 2003 and 2008 to 2019.
