BANGOR, Maine (WABI) - In an effort to get people vaccinated faster and more efficiently, Northern Light Health will begin offering community vaccinations for those 70 and older at the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor.

The Cross Insurance Center vaccination center will begin with a soft launch on Tuesday, February 2nd.

This will be the state’s second mass vaccination clinic for COVID-19.

The news comes less than a week after it was announced Scarborough Downs will be converted into a high-volume clinic.

The goal for next week is to vaccinate 900 people on Tuesday and an additional 900 on Thursday.

“We were overwhelmed by the number of individuals who want vaccine, and that’s good news. We want people to want the vaccine, we just need to get the vaccine to give it to them, and unfortunately we are hampered by the limited supply,” said Dr. James Jarvis, Northern Light’s COVID-19 senior physician executive.

Hospital officials say the mass vaccination site will include more than 40 fully staffed vaccination stations when its operating at full capacity.

“As we use it, that allows us to ask for more vaccine and this will allow us to be as efficient as possible in getting that vaccine into people’s arms,” said Jarvis.

People will need to register ahead of time to receive a vaccination appointment.

Community members over the age of 70 can currently register either online at covid.northernlighthealth.org/publicvaccine or through the call center hotline, 204-8551.

New appointments are released each Monday but can be updated throughout the week if more vaccine is available.

“I know people say the process is complex but it’s actually built for your safety. If you are scheduled for an appointment, then we have vaccine for you,” said Jarvis.

Hospital officials are reminding people to show up no more than 10 minutes prior to their scheduled time to reduce the potential for long lines outside the facility, especially during these colder winter months.

“This is a particularly good spot because of the geography of the region of the population that is centered around the greater Bangor area so from this location we can reach a variety of communities and a pretty broad geography within central Maine,” said Tim Doak, Associate VP planning, design, and construction with Northern Light Health.

Jarvis says they will continue to work with rural communities that don’t have easy access to the site.
