Head coach Jim Larranaga addressed his decision to no longer have freshman forward Matt Cross on the team following Miami's 66-54 loss at Wake Forest on Saturday:

"I think and I believed Matt used this expression, sometimes when you recruit someone who has a lot of qualities you're looking for and then they arrive on campus and things are going pretty well and you're really heading in the right direction and then for one reason or another, it just got to the point where I felt like he probably needed to make a change. I was probably just not the right coach for him. I have own my way of doing things and I think you've got to kind of buy into that, that approach, and if you don't then it probably makes you unhappy that you don't feel like it's an ideal fit. So I just came to the conclusion the best thing would be for him to find some place that he would be happier at."

Cross played in the Hurricanes' first 14 games, starting nine, and averaged 26.4 minutes a game. He did not play against Florida State on Wednesday due to a coach's decision and was no longer on the team the next day.

Cross averaged 6.9 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 1.4 assists. He shot 44.9 percent from the floor and a team-best 40.0 percent from 3 to go with 87.5-shooting from the free-throw line.

He was held scoreless in each of his last two games going 0 for 5 in 28 minutes as a starter in a loss to Notre Dame on Sunday after going 0 for 3 in 19 minutes off the bench in a loss to Syracuse. The two scoreless games came after he tied a season-high with 16 points in a win over then-No. 16 Louisville on Jan. 16.

Cross is a former four-star, top-100 recruit in the 2020 recruiting class according to the 247Sports composite rankings.

Anthony Walker has started in the Hurricanes' last two games with Cross out, averaging 12.5 points and 4.5 rebounds.
