BOSTON – Featuring a pair of RBI hits from junior Caitlin Coker and three strikeouts by classmate Allison Boaz, the Boston University softball team completed the home weekend series sweep against Holy Cross, 7-0, on Sunday afternoon.

With their fourth straight shutout, the Terriers (30-13, 9-0 PL) break their own one-year-old program and Patriot League record win streak with 19 consecutive victories, as the Crusaders fall to 13-26 (3-9 PL). The overall active win streak is the nation's second longest behind Arizona State (20 games), while the now 23-game home win streak also ranks No. 2 behind Oklahoma (32 games). BU leads with 26 straight wins against conference competition, including last year's PL tournament.

Coming off Saturday's game-two one-hitter, Boaz scattered three hits over seven innings to claim her fifth solo shutout and the team's 12th overall this season. The top of the lineup with Coker, graduate student Jen Horita, sophomore Kayla Roncin and sophomore Lauren Keleher went a combined 7-for-13 with five RBIs and six runs scored. Senior Aliyah Huerta-Leipner joined Coker, Roncin and Keleher in collecting two hits apiece.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • After Boaz retired the first nine Crusaders, Coker put BU on the scoreboard for good against Preseason PL Pitcher of the Year Kelly Nelson (9-14) with a one-out homer toward right in the bottom of the third inning.
  • Roncin followed with a two-out double and run scored on Keleher's RBI single to center.
  • The Crusaders led off the fourth with an infield single, but Boaz earned a line out, ground out and strikeout to maintain the 2-0 advantage.
  • During the bottom half, Huerta-Leipner hit a lead-off double down the first base line and scored on Coker's infield RBI to extend the lead to 3-0.
  • Senior Bella Gargicevich-Almeida added another run with an RBI sac fly in the fifth.
  • The Crusaders used a pair of singles in the sixth to advance a runner to third for the first time over the weekend before Boaz induced a fly out to center.
  • The first three Terriers got on base with back-to-back walks from Coker and Horita to set up Roncin's RBI single through the left side.
  • Keleher and graduate student Marina Sylvestri put the ball on the ground to earn an RBI each and extend the lead to 7-0.
  • After allowing a two-out walk, Boaz earned the line out to second.
GAME NOTES
  • Boaz helped extend the defense's scoreless streak to 29 straight innings, as BU allowed just five total hits over the weekend.
  • Both Coker and Keleher earned their fourth multi-RBI performance of the season.
  • Roncin has now had 22 multi-hit games and just needs four more hits to crack the top 10 at BU and 20 to set the school record.
  • BU improved to 46-8 all-time against Holy Cross and 23-1 at home.
UP NEXT
  • The Terriers will next wrap up the six-game homestand by hosting ACC rival Boston College on Wednesday (April 20) at 3 p.m.
  • BU has won the last three meetings, including both road games last season and a 3-2 walk-off home victory in 2019.
