LEXINGTON, Va. – Red-shirt junior Justin Starke had three hits, including a double and a home run, to lead the VMI baseball team to an 11-6 victory Sunday over visiting Holy Cross from Gray-Minor Stadium.
The four-game series sweep is the first for the program since records were kept prior to the 1951 season. The Keydets swept Lafayette College in a three-game set last season on Gray-Minor Feb. 25-27. VMI is now 5-3 on the year.
Doubles from Cole Jenkins and Grayson Fitzwater helped VMI score three in the second to go ahead 3-1. The Keydets plated two more in the fourth and Starke's two-run blast was part of a three-run fourth inning. The Crusaders scored two in the fifth and one in the seventh to cut the lead to 8-6, but three late insurance runs made sure Holy Cross got no closer.
Highlights:
*Six Keydets laced multiple hits as VMI had 15 on the afternoon
*Brett Cook was 2-3 with three runs scored, three stolen bases and a double
*Trey Morgan went 2-3 with a walk and a double and Jenkins finished with two doubles
*Freshmen Matthew Wright and Grayson Fitzwater each also had two hits
*Roberto Velasquez threw three innings for the win and Tyler Kaltreider was effect for four frames to pick up the save
*CJ Egrie and Jack Toomey homered for Holy Cross
Next Time:
*VMI has two midweek games on the schedule this week, Tuesday at #19th-ranked Virginia at 3 p.m. and at home Wednesday against Richmond at 5 p.m.
