LOWELL, Mass. – Senior Izzy Liquori (Agawam, Mass.) recorded three goals and two assists as the UMass Lowell women's lacrosse team (2-1) took down Holy Cross (1-2), 12-11, in a final minute thriller on Sunday afternoon.

Tied 10-10 with 4:30 remaining, junior Megan Brockbank (Bayport, N.Y.) sprinted past the Crusaders' defense and ripped a shot past the goaltender to give UMass Lowell their first lead of the afternoon. Moments later, Holy Cross retaliated as Christine Fabrizi snuck one into the back of the net, erasing the UMass Lowell lead. However, with only 34 seconds on the clock, Liquori bolted past two defenders and laced a shot into the top left corner that would be the game-winner.

"I thought that was the first game that we played the way we needed to," said head coach Lisa Miller. "We played smart, and we were really good defensively. I thought we had to make a few adjustments in the first quarter, and then we played lockdown defense the rest of the way. I'm happy with the effort and with how many people contributed. We're making progress as a program; you can see we sort of 'grew up' today. It was a close game and we won it."

With her second assist of the match, Liquori reached the 100-career point milestone, only the third River Hawk to reach the mark. Behind her, sophomore Jade Catlin (Middletown, Md.) totaled four points off two goals and two assists. Brockbank added in three goals, senior Grace Hansen (Stamford, Ct.) chipped in two goals and an assist, while senior Molly Shaw (Marshfield, Mass.) and Anna Bauter (Dexter, N.Y.) each scored a goal. Rounding out the point scorers was freshman Macy Shultz (Adams, N.Y.) who recorded an assist. In net, freshman Hannah Shaddock (Corning, N.Y.) made 10 saves in the win.

The River Hawks opened the game strong, outshooting the Crusaders 3-0 in the first three minutes. However, Holy Cross got on the board first, taking a 1-0 lead with 11:01 on the clock. Gaining momentum, the visitors continued to attack the UMass Lowell defense, stringing together three more goals to own a 4-0 lead with just over four minutes left in the first. With 2:10 to go, Liquori found Catlin open near the net, who fired one past the goalie, cutting the lead down to three to end the quarter.

UMass Lowell was relentless on offense to open the second quarter, scoring a goal 53 seconds in when Hansen found the back of the net off the pass from Shultz. Moments later, Hansen and Liquori tallied a goal, knotting the game up at 4-4 with just over 12 minutes remaining in the half. The two teams then quickly locked down on defense, as neither side could get on the board for over six minutes. The Crusaders finally ended the scoreless drought with a free-position goal and then added one more a few minutes later to take a 6-4 lead into the break.

After the visitors opened the second half with a quick goal, the River Hawks instantly fought back, with goals from Shaw and Brockbank in under three minutes to pull within one. Despite Holy Cross adding two more to regain a three-score lead, UMass Lowell continued to persevere, as Brockbank and Liquori each scored again to cut the lead down to 9-8 heading into the final quarter.

After the Crusaders opened the fourth with an early goal to take a 10-8 lead, UMass Lowell dominated possession. With 10:20 to go, Bauter launched a shot past the Holy Cross goaltender, pulling the hosts within one. Minutes later, Catlin tallied her second goal of the match, knotting the score up at 10-10 and setting up the thrilling final minutes of the game.

Next up, the River Hawks will hit the road to take on Stonehill on Wednesday, February 22. Opening draw is set for 7 p.m.
