Forecast in detail

The dramatic cold front sweeping the nation has finally arrived in Washington to deliver highs in the upper 40s to mid-50s through Thursday. We should manage decent sunshine the next few days, along with a blustery breeze tomorrow. Lows could dip to the frosty upper 20s in our outer suburbs Wednesday and Thursday night, but then highs bounce back into the 60s by this weekend.

Today (Halloween): A cooler start this morning in the 40s. Partly sunny skies try to fight our much cooler to colder air mass, but highs still struggle to reach the upper 40s to mid-50s. Wind from the northeast at 5 to 10 mph, with some higher gusts, offer a slight wind chill. Confidence: Medium-High

Tonight: Evening temperatures fall through the 40s for trick-or-treating under partly cloudy skies. Becoming breezier and colder overnight with lows by dawn ranging from near 30 in the coldest spots to near 40 in the city. Overnight winds from the northwest at 10 to 15 mph with higher gusts at times. Confidence: Medium-High

Tomorrow (Wednesday): This should be our coldest day of the week as not even partly to mostly sunny skies can lift highs past the middle 40s to lower 50s. The worst part is the wind, sustained around 15 to 20 mph from the northwest with occasional gusts up to 30-35 mph. That means quite chilly wind chills too. Confidence: Medium-High

Tomorrow night: Diminishing winds allow for temperatures to trend even colder than tonight. Look for subfreezing upper 20s in the far western to northwestern suburbs to the middle to upper 30s in the city. Confidence: Medium-High

A look ahead

Thursday should find mostly sunny skies with highs still in the colder-than-normal range of the lower to middle 50s. Thursday night is mostly clear and cold again with lows in the upper 20s to upper 30s. Confidence: Medium-High

Friday starts quite cold, but sunny skies and warmer breezes drive highs toward normal levels in the upper 50s to low 60s. Friday night should be partly cloudy with lows in the middle 30s to middle 40s. Confidence: Medium-High

This first weekend of November brings warmer weather as highs on Saturday move toward the middle 60s to near 70 with partly to mostly sunny skies. A few clouds may be around Saturday night with lows from near 40 in the outer suburbs to near 50 in the city. Sunday could see increasing clouds with highs in the 60s and the chance of a light shower by afternoon or evening. Confidence: Medium
