The American Red Cross today released its Fiscal Year 2023 American Red Cross Environmental, Social and Governance Report showcasing the organization’s progress toward delivering its mission in a way that increasingly benefits the communities it serves, its workforce and the planet. This second annual report details the organization’s priorities and work across four focus areas of environment, mission delivery, workplace and organizational culture, and governance.
“When it comes to the urgent challenges that families and communities are facing, the Red Cross has both the opportunity and the responsibility to act,” said Noel Anderson, chief sustainability officer of the American Red Cross. “We know that the way we deliver our lifesaving humanitarian mission matters significantly, and this report reflects our pledge to make a meaningful and lasting impact on the communities we serve, as well as our commitment to transparency.”
Highlights of the report include:
- Reducing carbon emissions by 8% in the last year
- Transitioning to renewable energy at 169 sites across 16 states
- Launching new programs to strengthen local partner networks and build more resilient communities in 10 counties across eight states
- Ensuring competitive pay and increasing the employee 401(k) match to 5% of pay
- Implementing enhanced data security controls to better protect the data of clients, donors, volunteers and employees
The Red Cross is one of the first humanitarian nonprofits to publish annual ESG reports, which are common among for-profit organizations. The report reflects progress during the organization’s fiscal year July 1, 2022 to June 30, 2023, and is written in accordance with Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) universal standards and aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG).
