Bozeman High’s Nathan Neil, the Class AA boys cross country state champion, added another achievement to his 2023 season on Saturday, winning the Nike Cross Regional Northwest Boys Championship 5K at Eagle Island State Park in Eagle, Idaho.
Neil placed first in 14 minutes, 49.6 seconds, nearly 16 seconds ahead of the next finisher. He broke the course record of 14:51, which was set last year by Tyrone Gorze of Central Point, Oregon. Gorze is currently at the University of Washington, where Neil formally signed to run this past week.
Neil’s time was his second-fastest of the season (and his career), trailing only his state championship-winning time of 14:45.5 on Oct. 21 in Kalispell. By winning on Saturday, he improved on his third-place showing at NXR last season (15:05.5) and qualified for Nike Cross Nationals for the second year in a row.
