BU Drops 17-13 Contest to Holy Cross - Boston University Athletics

BOSTON – BU women's lacrosse (6-4, 1-3 PL) lost to Holy Cross (6-4, 1-2 PL) in a 17-13 decision on Wednesday evening. In the loss at Nickerson Field, six different Terriers scored including freshman Jayne Feeney who led BU with four goals.
 
Feeney's scoring performance marks the second time this season she has scored at least a hat trick. Junior Kendall sims, senior Lauren Kaye and sophomores Hannah Tillier and Matty Spaeth each had two goals apiece while senior Jennifer Barry tallied one. 
 
Both junior Reilly Agres and senior Arielle Hammer made appearances in net for the Terriers. Agres made two saves in the loss. 

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Holy Cross scored first at the 12:46 mark but the Terriers were quick to answer. Feeney lit the lamp 38 seconds later to tie things up 1-1.
  • Spaeth extended BU's lead to 2-0 with a free position goal at the 10:41 mark. This would be the last time the Terriers scored in the half.
  • Holy Cross scored six more times in the first quarter, including on a woman-up advantage with 2:17 to go when senior Claire Gola was serving a yellow card.
  • The second quarter featured seven unanswered goals from the Crusaders. The running clock started with 7:03 to go in the half as the Crusaders led 12-2.
  • The half ended with Holy Cross up 14-2.
  • BU found its footing and scored just 52 seconds into the third quarter thanks to Feeney's second of the day.
  • Feeney found the back of the net again at the 12:47 mark to cut Holy Cross' lead to 14-4.
  • Goals went back and forth for the remainder of the third quarter with both teams scoring twice. Barry scored with 8:14 to go and Sims followed with a goal of her own at the 3:44 mark.
  • The fourth quarter featured BU's best scoring performance in the game. The Terriers got started with Tillier's first of the day which put BU back within nine goals and stopped the running clock,
  • Holy Cross responded with its 17th and final goal of the game a minute and a half later.
  • With 10:18 to go, Feeney scored her fourth of the game to put the Terriers back to a nine-goal deficit.
  • Spaeth and Sims scored goals nine and 10 for BU, respectively, as the quarter approached the halfway point.
  • Two of BU's final three goals were scored by Kaye who found the back of the net with 5:56 and 1:31 to go in the quarter. Her goals were separated by Tillier's second of the day which came on a free position at 3:41.
  • Despite BU's six unanswered goals in the final stanza, Holy Cross took the win 17-13.
 
GAME NOTES
  • BU outshot Holy Cross 27 to 19.
  • The Terriers went a perfect 13-for-13 on the clear while Holy Cross went 19-for-23.
  • BU controlled 25 draws to Holy Cross' nine.
  • Crusaders netminder Mackenzie Creagh made 14 saves against the Terriers.
  • Sims and Barry led the Terriers in caused turnovers with two apiece. 
 
UP NEXT
  • BU hits the road for its next Patriot League contest at Lafayette on Saturday (April 1). Opening draw is set for noon.
