Morrissey was cut for 18 stitches — eight inside his mouth and 10 on his chin — when Lizotte hit him with his stick.

The incident occurred after the two players exchanged a hook and slash on their way up the ice. When Lizotte turned and approached Morrissey near the Jets’ bench, the Winnipeg defenceman dropped his gloves in preparation for a fight. Instead he got a cross-check in the face and immediately dropped to the ice.

Jets forward Mason Appleton went after Lizotte, who was given a five-minute match penalty (and automatic game misconduct).

This is reckless cross-check, delivered well away from the play, that strikes an opponent at a dangerous height, with the force necessary to warrant supplemental discipline

The Jets got a goal from Pierre-Luc Dubois on the ensuing power play, ending a run of 23 opportunities without scoring, but lost the game 4-1.

Morrissey, the Jets second-leading scorer and point man on the No. 1 power play unit, missed the last six minutes of the second period while getting repairs, including the entire five-minute man-advantage.

Lizotte had a hearing with NHL Player Safety on Sunday. In a tweet, NHL Player Safety explained that it understood Lizotte’s assertion that he did not intend to strike Morrissey in such a manner, but players are responsible for their stick at all times.

“This is reckless cross-check, delivered well away from the play, that strikes an opponent at a dangerous height, with the force necessary to warrant supplemental discipline.”

  2. Jets leading goal scorer Mark Scheifele has just a single assist since that 5-3 loss to the Carolina Hurricanes and hasn't scored a goal in seven contests.

In its summary of the ruling, the DOPS cited Lizotte’s clean record — he had not been fined, nor suspended previously in his 249 NHL games — as a reason for handing down just a one-game suspension.

The Jets, who are battling the Calgary Flames and Nashville Predators for the final wild card playoff spot in the Western Conference, will play the San Jose Sharks on Tuesday night in Northern California.
