Lehigh Sweeps Series at Holy Cross Behind 8-4 Sunday Triumph - Lehigh University Athletics

WORCESTER, Mass. – Fifth-year Gerard Sweeney blasted a two-run home run in the eighth inning to break a 4-4 tie and Lehigh added two runs in the ninth to defeat Holy Cross 8-4 Sunday in the final game of a three-game series at Fitton Field. Sweeney's third home run of the season delivered two of his three RBIs on the day as Lehigh sweeps the weekend series to move to 17-20 overall and 4-10 in the Patriot League.
 
Sophomore Justin Butler opened the scoring with a long two-run home run out to left in the fourth inning, Butler's fifth of the season. Classmate Jake Whitlinger added an RBI single that scored junior Andrew Nole to put the Mountain Hawks up 3-0.
 
Holy Cross (11-27, 3-11 PL) responded with three runs in the home fourth and went ahead 4-3 after a throwing error brought home an unearned run in the fifth.
 
Junior Tyler Young pulled Lehigh even in the sixth with a bloop RBI single to right that scored Sweeney.
 
Fifth-year Joe Gorla singled to lead off the eighth and Sweeney followed by drilling a pitch out to left center field wall to give the Mountain Hawks a 6-4 lead.
 
Lehigh added two more runs in the top of the ninth behind an RBI double by sophomore Rafe Perich and a sacrifice fly off the bat of Sweeney to go up 8-4.
 
Fifth-year Casey Rother came out of the bullpen in the bottom of the ninth to throw a 1-2-3 inning to complete the series sweep.
 
Sweeney went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and his three RBIs. Perich added a 3-for-5 effort with an RBI and two runs scored. Lehigh tallied 11 hits off of three Holy Cross pitchers, while limiting the Crusaders to just six hits on the day.
 
Sophomore Val Taddei earned the victory on the mound with two innings of scoreless, one-hit relief. Junior Teddy Tolliver started and went the first four innings. Five Lehigh pitchers combined to strike out nine Holy Cross hitters.
 
Jack Toomey went 2-for-4 with a home run to lead Holy Cross offensively.
 
Four Patriot League games await the Mountain Hawks this week. Lehigh will visit rival Lafayette Wednesday at 3 p.m. for a single game before welcoming Bucknell to J. David Walker Field at Legacy Park for three games April 22-23.
