Softball Takes Two from Holy Cross - Bucknell University Athletics - Bucknell University Athletics

WORCESTER, Mass.- The Bucknell Bison softball team (12-26, 4-10 PL) won two crucial games against the Holy Cross Crusaders (14-31-1, 2-12 PL) on Saturday. The Bison won 5-2 and 7-6 to secure fifth place in the conference and keep the drive alive for the fourth and final seed in the Patriot League tournament.

"It was so fun to be a part of two big wins today. We had timely hitting, big time pitching performances and I'm just so proud of the way we showed up. We have a lot left to play for and I'm excited to finish this series." 

Game One Recap: Bucknell 5, Holy Cross 2

Olivia Marinelli started in the circle for the Bison. 

Holy Cross struck first in the bottom of the opening inning with a solo home run. 

The Bison grabbed the lead in the top of the third inning by scoring three runs. Ava Aguilar led off with a single and was advanced to third off two sacrifice bunts. MaKenzie Hilling knocked a double off the left-center wall to score Aguilar. Zoie Smith kept the momentum going with an RBI single and then stole second. Savannah Jones singled down the right field line and was thrown out trying to stretch it into a double but Smith scored before the tag to make it 3-1. 

The Crusaders grabbed a run back in the bottom of the third inning. With one out, the Crusaders hits two singles and a walk to score a run and chase Marinelli from the game. Kaiya Burton entered the game and promptly kept the 3-2 lead for the Bison. 

Bucknell added an insurance run in the top of the fifth frame. Haley Speicher tripled to center field and Hilling walked and stole second. Smith hit an infield single to load the bases. Jones hit a RBI fielder's choice to score the fourth run of the game. Chase Knapp grounded out to end the inning but the Bison had the padded advantage. 

The Orange & Blue totaled another insurance run in the seventh inning. Speicher walked and stole second. Smith drove her in with a sharp single for the 5-2 lead. 

Holy Cross placed two runners on with a walk and an error but Burton prevented any runs from scoring and Bucknell had the win. 

Game Two Recap: Bucknell 7, Holy Cross 6

Bucknell quickly grabbed the lead in the second game by scoring two runs in the first inning. With two outs, Smith singled and stole second base. Jones drove her in with a single and then advanced to second on the throw home. Knapp time followed with Chase Knapp hitting a triple down the right field line to score Jones and give Bucknell a 2-0 lead. 

Holy Cross tied up the game in their frame of the first. A walk and a double scored the first run. A single plated the second run to tie the game. Jones settled down and obtained three straight outs to end the inning. 

The Crusaders jumped out to a 5-2 lead in the bottom of the third. Two walks and a single loaded the bases to chase Jones from the game. Madison Roukey entered the game and Holy Cross smacked a double to clear the bases for the 5-2. Roukey prevented further damage by inducing three more outs. 

Bucknell counterattacked immediately. Chase Knapp led off with a double and Kailyn Lorberter nailed a single to send home the Californian senior. Speicher slashed a single through the starboard side to score another run. The inning ended without further scoring but Bucknell cut the deficit to 5-4. 

Holy Cross tallied a run back in their fourth frame. A double and a bunt single set up runners at the corners. A wild pitch scored one run. Roukey rallied and shut down the Crusaders to prevent further damage but Holy Cross had a 6-4 lead. 

Bucknell seized the lead in the fifth stanza. Zoie Smith worked a walk after a lengthy at-bat. The fourth ball just missed the strike zone as Smith's catcher eye proved crucial. Jones singled up the middle and Knapp drew another walk. Lorberter continued her career day with a two-run double to tie the game at 6-6 and induce a pitching change for Holy Cross. Juliette Basso pinch hit and delivered a sacrifice fly for the 7-6 lead. Two outs followed to end the inning but Bucknell held the advantage.

Burton entered the circle in the sixth inning. Holy Cross threatened twice in the final innings. The Crusaders placed two runners on in the sixth frame but Burton kept steady and prevented a tied game. A single occurred in the final inning but a swinging strikeout sealed the win for Bucknell.

Sunday's game has been moved to Monday at 12 pm.
